The business case

Why scent works.

Six commercial outcomes, one mechanism. This is what a scent programme is actually bought for — and how to tell whether yours is delivering.

Impacting business through scent

What scent moves

From the hotel lobby to the shop floor to the balance sheet — what a considered scent programme actually moves.

The Power of Scent: how scent marketing affects hotel lobbies, retail floors and business results — brand recall up 40%, length of stay up 15%, spend per visit up 25%.

+40%

Increased brand recall

Guests who meet a signature scent remember the brand markedly better than those who do not.

+15%

Length of stay extended

Ambient scenting slows a visit down, and a longer visit sees more of what you offer.

+25%

Spend per visit increased

The commercial consequence of dwell time, and the figure most retailers care about.

Scent marketing solutions

Key benefits

Improve brand recognition

Scent marketing strengthens recognition by creating one consistent sensory cue across every touchpoint — every site, every visit, every product that leaves with a customer.

01

Create high-value perception

Fragrance signals quality before anything is said. The right scent elevates the atmosphere of a space and communicates refinement, care and exclusivity without a word of copy.

02

Extend customer linger time

A well-crafted scent invites people to stay. By lifting mood and deepening comfort it slows the visit down — and a slower visit is a longer, more considered one.

03

Attract new customers

A distinctive scent works as a quiet ambassador. It draws people in from a doorway, sparks curiosity, and gets remarked on in the reviews and conversations you never paid for.

04

Enhance the customer experience

Scent shapes a first impression in an instant, below the level at which anyone is evaluating your marketing. It is the part of the experience people feel rather than assess.

05

Encourage repeat business

Loyalty grows through emotion, and scent is a potent trigger for it. A returning customer recognises the air before they recognise the room.

06
Measuring it

How to know whether it is working

Scent marketing has a reputation for being unmeasurable. It is not — you simply have to instrument it before you switch it on. The most common mistake is installing first and looking for a change afterwards, at which point any movement is indistinguishable from seasonality.

Capture at least four weeks of baseline on the metrics the business already reports: spend per visit, conversion rate, dwell time, length of stay, repeat visit rate, satisfaction scores. Do not invent a scent-specific KPI. If you run several sites, scent two and leave two unscented for the measurement period — a control removes seasonality and promotions from the comparison in a way a before-and-after at one site never can.

One free leading indicator: unprompted mentions of smell in reviews. Before installation these are almost always negative. Afterwards, the useful signal is not praise for the fragrance — it is the disappearance of complaints about the air.

Behind the scent

The science

Scent is the only sense connected directly to the brain’s limbic system — the centre for memory and emotion. Every other sense is filtered and rationalised on the way there. Smell is not.

That is the science behind ambient scent marketing: a carefully chosen fragrance can calm, energise or trigger a specific memory faster than anything a person sees or hears — and it does it below the level at which they are evaluating your marketing.
